Producing an album can feel like giving birth. At least that’s what Lil Nas X would have us believe.
To promote the imminent arrival of his album “MONTERO,” also known as his baby, the singer released an online baby registry. Instead of strollers, onesies, and cribs, people can donate to charities including Bros In Convo, locally Transinclusive Group.
He announced the fundraiser on social media, tweeting, “Me and my team have set up a ‘baby registry' for many charities if you guys would like to donate.” Each of the 15 tracks on Montero are paired with a charity. Fans can browse through and donate to any of the songs and charities they like.
Like many things the Old Town Road singer does, this project immediately grabs your attention. The registry greets you with a picture of a “pregnant” Lil Nas X in a white dress with a bouquet of white roses in hand and a laurel of white roses on his head. He originally posted these fake pregnancy pictures on Sept. 2 with the caption “I can’t believe I’m finally announcing this. My little bundle of joy ‘MONTERO’ is due Sept. 17.” His real name is Montero Lamar Hill.
The initial pictures received mixed reactions. Many fans posted messages of support, but, as can be expected with social media, many people tweeted self-righteous indignation. Lil Nas X responded saying “...all of this negative attention is not good for the baby.”
When Montero arrives on Sept. 17 it will include collaborations with Elton John, Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, and Miley Cyrus. Until then you can follow his “pregnancy” on his social media accounts.
