A lesbian Iraq War veteran could be the first woman elected as a representative to the 23rd Congressional District in Texas.
Gina Ortiz Jones is running against two-time Republican incumbent Will Hurd in November, according to the Daily Beast. If she wins, she would be the first Filipina-American, first woman and first out lesbian to serve the district.
“I would be honored to be the first in a number of respects, but more important is that I am not the last,” she said. “We will have made progress, but there is still a lot of work to do.”
Lupe Valdez, the Democratic candidate for governor in Texas, could become the first out lesbian in the position if she wins in November.
