Latina Lesbian Running in Texas Gubernatorial Election

Lupe Valdez could be the first out lesbian to be governor of a U.S. state if she wins in Texas.

The lesbian is running in a November race against Republican incumbent Greg Abbott, according to the Advocate. Valdez had won both the primary and the runoff election to become the Democratic candidate.

“Everybody’s telling me this is an uphill battle,” said Valdez. “My response to that is, when has it not been an uphill battle for me? I’m getting darn good at uphill battles.”

Valdez previously served as the sheriff of Dallas County for three consecutive terms starting in 2004. Her campaign includes a pro-public education, pro-environment and pro-immigrant agenda.
