Numerous bills have been introduced throughout the U.S. that target LGBT students. However, a project was created to give schools a chance to help empower these students by applying for grants.

The It Gets Better Project began the 50 States. 50 Grants. 5000 Voices initiative to allow schools to apply for up to $10,000 in funds to support LGBT students and was made available to middle and high schools in every state. The project has now announced the winners.

Fifty grants are being awarded in 40 states plus Washington D.C., including many traditionally conservative areas. A community-wide Pride event at a school in Florida won one of these grants.

The grant opportunities were made possible by the support of American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. (AEO) through American Eagle and Aerie customer donations from all 50 states via their Real Rewards loyalty program, as well as an in-store pin-pad promotion during Pride Month 2021.
