Twins Liam and August Easton-Calabria of Seattle have both been active Boy Scout members since they were eleven-years-old, but because one brother is gay, he will be forced to leave the Boy Scouts when he turns 21 while his brother will remain.
Liam is openly gay, but his brother August is straight. Because the Boy Scouts of America policy bans openly gay adults, but not gay youth, Liam will soon be forced out of the Boy Scouts despite his achievements. The brothers did all their activities together while in the Boy Scouts; both share 22 identical merit badges and both earned the Eagle Scout Badge, the highest level of recognition but because of the BSA rules, Liam will not be able to continue to be involved.
“It’s really an interesting revelation to see the Boy Scouts come together as a non-inclusive organization,” Liam told reporters. “I don’t think it’s true to the scouting way.”
The brothers and their father were all involved in scouting together, and Liam said he hoped that one day he would be able to scout with his own children.
Liam said, “I want to do as much as I can to see my children in scouting with me involved.”
