Carlos Menchaca is no stranger to firsts. Menchaca, 40, who represents District 38 on the New York City Council, is Brooklyn’s first openly gay officeholder and the state’s first Mexican-American elected official.
Now, you can add another first to Menchaca’s political resumé and it involves embattled New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
“Other mayoral candidates kicked the can on Cuomo to state legislators and the AG. I was the first mayoral candidate to call for Cuomo to resign. You will always know where I stand with women and survivors #CuomoHasToGo,” Menchaca tweeted on March 12.
Cuomo is under pressure to resign after six women have accused the governor of sexual harassment. On Sunday, President Joe Biden declined to take a side, stating an investigation is underway and “we should see what it brings us.”
Meanwhile, although still early in the process, the NYC mayoral race is starting to take shape with a dozen top-tier candidates vying to move into the Gracie Mansion.
The city is preparing to use ranked voting for this election. A poll by Emerson College conducted March 4-6 showed former presidential candidate Andrew Yang leading the field with 32% support.
Current Mayor Bill de Blasio is term-limited and leaves office at the end of the year. The winner of the June 22 Democratic primary will in all likelihood become the next mayor.
