PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A lawyer who's been instrumental in the battle to legalize gay marriage is being honored in Maine.

EqualityMaine, which led the fight for gay marriage in Maine, is honoring Mary L. Bonauto with the Lifetime Achievement Award at its annual awards gala on Saturday, March 28.

The Portland resident has been working with Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders since 1990.

Over the years, she's been involved in fighting discrimination in employment and public accommodations and ensuring domestic partner benefits as well as helping to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act.
