Back to school means it’s time for high school seniors to start thinking about prospective college campuses — LGBT students especially need to factor in safe universities. Now the decision is even easier with the list of top 30 LGBT-friendly campuses released by Campus Pride.
Campus Pride Executive Director Shane Windmeyer explained the importance of LGBT safety this year especially, in a statement. The list has over 235 colleges and universities with individual profiles based on their LGBT-friendly policies, programs and services.
“Prospective students and their families today expect colleges to be LGBTQ-friendly. They want to know what LGBTQ programs, services and resources are available on the campus ― and which are the ‘Best of the Best,” he said.
The eighth-annual list looks at universities based on their ratings on the Campus Pride Index.
Windmeyer added: “Now more than ever, there are colleges that are recruiting LGBTQ youth ― and they are investing in a campus that is fully supportive of LGBTQ students. This Top 30 list showcases those ‘Top’ campuses leading the way.”
No Florida universities made the top 30 list.
Only six Florida schools make the LGBTQ-Friendly Campus Search. The list excludes Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, University of Florida and more.
In order of highest to lowest ratings, the colleges and universities are: University of Central Florida, University of North Florida, Stetson University, University of Miami, New College of Florida and Seminole State College of Florida.
“The Campus Pride Index is a vital tool for assisting campuses in learning ways to improve their LGBTQ campus life and ultimately shape the educational experience to be more inclusive, welcoming and respectful of LGBTQ and ally people,” the website reads. “Campus Pride commends the campuses participating in the index and their willingness to come out, be visible and actively advocate for improving higher education for LGBTQ people.”
