One of the biggest Halloween retailers in the country confirmed to the New York Daily News it will sell a Caitlyn Jenner costume at its pop-up stores throughout the country this fall.
"Caitlyn Jenner has proven to be the most important real-life superhero of the year, and Spirit Halloween is proud to carry the costume that celebrates her," Trisha Lombardo, Spirit Halloween PR and marketing head, told the NYDN.
Unsurprisingly, many find the costume offensive and transphobic. But Lombardo told the Huffington Post the Jenner costume shouldn't be viewed in a negative context as the company sells a number of other celebrity costumes.
"At Spirit Halloween, we create a wide range of costumes that are often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes," she said.
"We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated. The Caitlyn Jenner costume reflects just that."
Nevertheless, the National Center for Transgender Equality's Vincent Villano told HuffPo the Jenner costume is offensive to many trans people.
"There's no tasteful way to 'celebrate' Caitlyn Jenner or respect transgender people this way on the one night of the year when people use their most twisted imaginations to pretend to be villains and monsters," he said.
Details on the costume have yet to be revealed but will reportedly go on sale in the next four to six weeks.
Costume website AnytimeCostumes.com has a Jenner costume for sale as well. The outfit, which sells for $74.99, is based off Jenner's now-iconic Vanity Fair cover.
A description for the costume reads:
Everyone has seen Vanity Fair's popular July cover, so you'll be easily recognized this Halloween when you dress up in the Call Me Caitlyn Unisex Adult Costume. With the items in the set, you'll be able to emulate her picture perfect look for the upcoming party this year. Included are a white padded top and matching shorts as well as a brunette wig so that you can dress as the softer side of the popular Olympian. A sash that says "call me Caitlyn" also comes with the set so that there will be no mistaking who you are dressed as this Halloween. You probably won't break any Twitter records when you wear this outfit like Caitlyn did when she first made her account, but you'll be sure to get a few laughs out of your friends and the other guests at the get together.
