Vice President Joe Biden gave an interview to women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe on Thursday.
Rapinoe, 34, a popular lesbian and gold medal-winning athlete, hosted a video broadcast on her Instagram channel with the former Vice President and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden. Jill Biden dyed her hair purple for the interview, a nod to Rapinoe who often dyed her hair for soccer matches.
“I actually hope this washes out,” Jill laughed.
“It does after about two months,” Rapinoe responded.
Biden is the presumptive Democratic party nominee for President, leading a candidate field that at one point had more than 20 major contenders. His challenge is to unite the country in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic.
“There’s a sense of grief that I’m feeling that goes beyond the pandemic,” Rapinoe said during the interview. “There’s a greater need for empathy and understanding each other and realize that in the absence of doing this all together we’re just imploding right next to each other.”
Biden said he would go “very slow” on opening America’s businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said assurances need to be in place for significant social distancing and the infection curve should be going down.
Massage parlors and barbershops would be tough to open, Biden said to which Rapinoe replied, “No, we don’t want any of that,” while holding up her arms in an “X” signal.
Joe Biden said he had not left his yard and always wears a mask. The Bidens are quarantined in Delaware. They have children in California and Florida and six grandchildren together. Rapinoe had previously endorsed U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.
“I see the party coming together,” Biden said. “Character is on the ballot. This is so much bigger than our party. This is about the future of our country.”
