HAZEL PARK, Mich. (AP) — Two Detroit-area nurses who are challenging Michigan's ban on gay marriage have welcomed a fourth adopted child into their home.

The Detroit Free Press (http://on.freep.com/11tnxOF ) says the adoption of 2-year-old Rylee DeBoer-Rowse became final Tuesday.

April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse are raising three other children in Hazel Park, but Michigan law bars them from jointly adopting the kids because they're not married. They objected to that law in a case that eventually grew into a major challenge to the state's ban on gay marriage.

An appeals court recently upheld the ban, but the women and Attorney General Bill Schuette hope the U.S. Supreme Court will settle the issue. Schuette is defending a 2004 amendment to the Michigan Constitution, which recognizes marriage only as between a man and a woman.
