Tony Award-winning “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” is in town, presented by Slow Burn Theatre Co. and Broward Center.

“Charlie Brown faces problems that will always resonate with people,” said Cameron Jordan, recent winner of the Carbonell Award for Best Supporting Actor, Musical, and the performer bringing Charlie Brown to life.

Jordan enjoys performing in Florida and lived here for a few years, but his touring has taken him as far away as theatrical productions in California.
“As a performer, you have to get used to nights alone and on the road, but the craft makes it all special and worthwhile.” Jordan, who is from South Carolina, comes from a family of thespians. His mother and father both teach and direct theater, also having had a career as performers.

Jordan said the production never had the need to modernize the original musical. He said “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” is a fun show that anyone can see.

“I think everyone’s doing an amazing job together” he went on to say.

When asked about his acting method, Jordan said “I learned a while ago not to ask ‘how’ a character will do something, but the ‘why’ behind it.”

In addition he joked that the hardest part about being a musical performer isn’t the songs, but infusing meaning into the dialogue.

“The whole gang is here! Bossy Lucy is hopelessly in love with piano prodigy Schroeder who doesn’t give her the time of day, perfectionist Sally is still mocking blanket-toting Linus, Snoopy is in the doghouse, and “blockhead,” himself, Charlie Brown, is in rare form.” the website description reads. “Whether you’re keen to fly with the Red Baron, moon over the Moonlight Sonata, or just do your best to find “Happiness,” You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown is a crowd-pleasing classic.”

On the night SFGN saw the show, the audience was part families and part members of the community who know the beloved Charles Schulz comic strip.

Children and adults alike enjoyed the timeless humor of the production. When the lights dimmed down for a character to express themselves, you could hear a pin drop.

The cast has excellent musical and acting chemistry: Linus, Lucy, Schroeder, Sally, Snoopy, and Charlie Brown are the same dysfunctional gang that is sometimes waxing philosophical.

“You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” will be shown at the Broward Center, Abdo New River Room until Mar. 10. It will then move to the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center Mar. 14-17.
