Young professionals group has much to be happy about

“The Pride Center's Varsity Club was created to help foster South Florida's up and coming community leaders, activists, and philanthropists,” according to their mission statement. The organization was launched this summer. In August the group, led by Jason Burns, Major Gifts Officer of the Pride Center at Equality Park, partnered with Women in Network to gather backpacks and school supplies for needy students at Thurgood Marshall Elementary.

They presented students with over 150 backpacks, 325 notebooks, 316 highlighters, 1450 pencils and 3500 sheets of paper. In July the organization took to the waters around Wilton Manors and cleaned up the middle river, bringing in several gallons of trash. Currently they are developing projects to benefit the community over the holiday season.

They are also looking to increase their volunteer base and steering committee members. If you’re a young professional interested in volunteering and community service, or have any potential projects in need of volunteers, a good time to introduce yourself would be at their monthly happy hour at The Manor Entertainment Complex on Wilton Drive. The happy hour takes place on Friday, Sept. 30 at 5:30 p.m. and its date is easy to remember as it always takes place on the last Friday of the month.
