SFGN Adds Keen News Service to News Sections

Keen News Service

Sfgn publisher Norm Kent announced this week that he has contracted with renowned LGBT journalist Lisa Keen and the Keen News Service to deliver content based LGBT news to SFGN.

“Lisa has been reporting LGBT news since 1979, and was the editor of one of the nation’s most respected gay newspapers, the Washington Blade, for 18 years,” Kent said. “Her unparalleled news organization and team delivers national political and legal news that involves or affects LGBT people. She is the best at what she does, and it authenticates the mission of SFGN to be the best at what we do.”

Keen has won the Silver Gavel Award from the American Bar Association for her coverage of an anti-gay initiative in Colorado and its subsequent landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision in Romer v. Evans. She also won a Society of Professional Journalists award for her series of interviews—from diagnosis to death—with one of the first gay men to develop AIDS in the early 1980s.

Keen News Service correspondent Chuck Colbert is a Cambridge, Mass.-based freelance journalist who has been reporting for gay and mainstream audiences since 1991. His coverage has included the full range of LGBT issues in civil right and liberation, including gays in the military, employment non-discrimination and hate crimes, same-sex marriage and the family, law, politics, business, education, and religion. He is a former New England chapter president of the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association who has covered national political conventions.

A former senior correspondent and columnist for the In Newsweekly, he is a frequent contributor to the National Catholic Reporter (NCR), where he covered the Boston archdiocese clerical sex abuse scandal. He also contributes to Press Pass Q, the on-line trade publication for gay media professionals. He has provided gay-themed commentary to such mainstream media as the Philadelphia Inquirer, San Francisco Chronicle, and Washington Post, among others.

Also on the Keen Team is correspondent Dana Rudolph, a journalist, new media producer, and veteran of the online industry. She writes a regular column on LGBT parenting for several LGBT newspapers, including Bay Windows, the Philadelphia Gay News, and Windy City Times. Her writing has also appeared at 365gay.com, the Bilerico Project, the Huffington Post, and the Washington Post’s “On Parenting” blog.

She is the founder of Mombian, a leading news, opinion, and information blog for lesbian moms and other LGBT parents. Most recently, she was a vice president at Merrill Lynch, developing marketing and business strategies for several key online initiatives. She was also the first leader of the firm’s global LGBT employee network. Dana has a BA summa cum laude from Wellesley College.

In this week’s edition, SFGN, which also has a contract with the Associated Press, and whose membership in the Florida Press Association is pending, publishes Lisa Keen’s piece on the Supreme Court case arguing the extent to which anti gay pastor Fred Phelps, of Topeka, Kansas, will be allowed to protest at private funerals.
