The time of year when most of the country is putting on layers and ramping up their indoor sports is when South Florida heads outside in shorts and airy shorts.

Rainbow Sports League (RSL) is ramping up for its seventh kickball season and looking for new players to join a team.

“The response to kickball has been amazing to see,” RSL General Manager Jason Shervinski says. “The response has always been positive, and it feels great to be a part of something bigger than only a few individuals.” To generate excitement for the new season, RSL is having an “open play” this weekend, essentially a chance for people to give it a try with no obligation. You can check it out at Mills Pond Park on Oct. 9 from 12-2 p.m.

RSL was founded in 2019 with the ultimate goal of bringing a fun, safe, and welcoming atmosphere to the LGBT sports community. “We are predominantly an LGBT-focused league however we do have many individuals who identify as straight. Those individuals enjoy our league because it comes with a more relaxed environment,” Shervinski said.

Once the season starts on Oct. 16, teams play two games from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. every Saturday for seven weeks. Cost is $60, which covers the use of the fields, uniform t-shirt, umpires, and insurance.

Seth Jones is a player and captain of team Big Kick Energy and can’t wait for the start of the new season. “I love the camaraderie that has developed with my teammates over the seasons as well as the opportunity to befriend people that I might not otherwise have met.” Jones also says taking a leadership position has helped him develop. “Captaining a team has been one of the best, most humbling experiences of my life, and I’ve grown so much from it.”

Registration is still open and players who are interested in signing up for the season can register at fll.rainbowsportsleague.com/leagues.
