A burglar who jimmied the lock at a popular vintage candy store didn’t have a sweet tooth. He was looking for cash and he found it.

A video camera at To the Moon captured the suspect rifling through the store’s unlocked cash register, grabbing all the money and slipping out of the store. Owner Ralph Dumas told police the burglar made off with $600 cash early Monday morning from the specialty boutique at 2205 Wilton Drive. The novelty sweet shop is located in the heart of the city’s popular downtown district.

“Here is the scumbag thief taking all the money from the register,” Dumas says in a narration of a store surveillance video recently posted to Facebook.

The black and white video shows a slender man calmly pulling wads of cash from the store cash register, then picking his cell phone up off the counter and walking out. At one point, the man lifts the tray off the bottom of the cash register, reaches beneath it, appears to scoop up more money. The suspect in the video had dark facial hair, a full beard and was wearing a white baseball cap on backwards, a tank top and jeans.

According to a police report, Dumas left the store at 11:13 p.m. on Sunday after locking up, only to be notified by his alarm company at 12:34 a.m. on Monday that the rear door to his business was ajar.

Dumas returned to his business and discovered the back door open. Cash from the register was the only thing he reported missing.

Officers arriving at the scene noticed a small piece of wood had been removed from the back door. Dumas said he found the wood that morning and figured that was what was making the store alarm malfunction. Police found no visible pry marks on the door.

Exterior video of the store showed the suspect approaching the rear door of the business at 12:34 a.m. on Monday, compromising the dead bolt and slipping inside. Interior video captured the man raiding the cash register.

The suspect had apparently cased the business the night before. Another exterior video captured what appears to be the same man in the same clothing attempting to open all the rear doors to all the businesses in the same plaza at 12:34 a.m. on Sunday, according to a police report. That video shows the suspect spending several minutes at Dumas’ rear store entrance before leaving on foot.

Police are asking anyone with information about the burglary to call 954-390-2150.
