The City of Pembroke Pines has scheduled the first public reading for an ordinance that would extend domestic partner benefits to city employees.

It’s on the agenda for the May 7 City Commission meeting. The resolution is currently being drafted by the City Attorney. The ordinance would extend city employee benefits to qualifying domestic partners, the same way they’re extended to spouses of married employees.

Commissioner Iris Siple, who introduced the item, said she hopes the ordinance will be seen through to provide fair benefits for all.

“I think it means we are truly an inclusive city,” Siple said. “It means we understand our employees and want to take care of them like they take care of the City. And it’s just the right thing to do. Fair is fair.”
