Out of the Closet Thrift Shop Coming to Lauderdale

East Sunrise Locale to Open by End of 2010

For months a sign perched at the lot of a former gas station has promised a new “Out of the Closet” thrift store at 1785 E. Sunrise Blvd.

By the end of the year, the 7,000-square-foot outlet will be open, according to Matt LaMariana, Fort Lauderdale district manager of retail operations.

The store will be similar to the slightly larger Wilton Manors store, with a pharmacy and AIDS testing center. The thrift store chain is owned by the Los Angeles-based nonprofit AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which uses proceeds from its thrift stores and pharmacies to pay for research, AIDS testing and prevention programs and medical care for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Although the shops will be a little more than two miles apart, they’ll serve “a different demographic,” LaMariana said “We’ll get a different donor base and new customers at the Sunrise location.”

The Sunrise location will feature the chain’s South Florida signature colors, teal and magenta. “You’ll be able to see it from space,” LaMariana quipped.

Until the new store opens, donate small items at the side door of the Wilton Manors shop, 2097 Wilton Drive, or call 877-274-2548 to schedule a pick-up of larger items.
