For more than a quarter of a century, Beach Betty’s has been a stable and safe gathering for lesbians and their admirers.
The bar, located in Dania Beach, is often described as a lesbian version of “Cheers.” It’s a neighborhood pub which hosts rock and roll bands from time to time and has a pool table, darts board and drink specials served up by friendly bartenders.
The patrons at Beach Betty’s are mostly women who love women with a few straight gay gays thrown in for good measure. The bar, located in a strip mall, off East Dania Beach Blvd., is cozy and quaint with a beachy themed mural adorning its walls.
“I opened the bar because there was no place for women who liked women to go,” said owner Karen Guethle.
Breaking new ground for lesbians was risky twenty five years ago, but Guethle took a chance and went out into the neighborhood to reveal her plans.
“I had to educate our neighbors about the gay and lesbian community,” Guethle said.
And she had help.
“This bar has been successful because my friends and the community has always supported me,” Guethle said.
Two of her bartenders, Lucy and Delaina, have worked at Beach Betty’s for 25 and 15 years, respectively. Along with Suzi and Trai, the bartenders, Guethle says, are the assets that make her business a success.
Guethle also credits her former partner Karen Kelly with helping acquire a liquor license.
“Our first 16 years was just beer and wine and that was tough,” Guethle said.
But Beach Betty’s has endured and remains a safe and fun spot for ladies and their admirers to gather and have a good time.
