A traffic accident Sunday afternoon in Oakland Park claimed the life of a man and sent a woman to the hospital.

The accident took place at the intersection of Northeast 6 Avenue and East Oakland Park Boulevard around 4:40 p.m.

A 2002 Dodge Caravan was traveling eastbound on East Oakland Park Boulevard approaching the intersection of Northeast 6 Avenue. The driver of the van, Clair Schweiger, 70, then made a left turn into the northbound lanes of Northeast 6 Avenue and into the path of a 2016 BMW 650i traveling westbound. The BMW struck the passenger side of the Caravan, ejecting Schweiger upon impact.

Oakland Park Fire Rescue transported Schweiger to Broward Health Medical Center where he was pronounced dead just before 7 p.m. The female passenger in the BMW was transported to Holy Cross Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

At the time of the collision, both east and west traffic had a solid green signal. Additionally, speed does not appear to be a contributing factor in this accident.

Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives continue their investigation though charges are not pending.
