On Thursday, the City of North Miami announced plans to construct a sculpture dedicated to the LGBTQ community.

The news came via e-mail from City Councilman Scott Galvin.

“The project was inspired by the tragedy at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub in June of 2016,” Galvin writes. “Rather than be a somber memorial to those victims, North Miami’s sculpture will be a celebration of LGBTQ lives and an acknowledgement of LGBTQ contributions in Miami-Dade County.”

The city has selected Enchanted Forest Elaine Gordon Park, 1725 N.E. 135 Street, as the host site for the sculpture. The 22-acre park contains indigenous oak hammocks, a creek and walking trails.

A timeline of significant moments in LGBTQ history will accompany the sculpture, Galvin said. The project is funded to the tune of $30,000 by North Miami’s District 1 budget.
