The race for Florida’s U.S. Senate seat is just getting cranked up and on the Democratic side contenders are eager to state their commitment to the LGBT community.

In an e-mail, U.S. Congressman Patrick E. Murphy (FL-18) expresses his support for marriage equality, citing three reasons.

“1. I believe in equal rights for all Americans, regardless of race, creed, gender, religion, or sexual orientation. 2. Love is love, regardless of gender. 3. All families deserve to have equal representation under the law,” Murphy writes.

Murphy, 33, a resident of Jupiter, is seeking the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Republican Marco Rubio.

One of his rivals in the race, U.S. Navy veteran Pam Keith, also stated her support for marriage equality and transgender people during a speech last week at the Palm Aire-Cypress Bend Democratic Club meeting in Pompano Beach.

“I’m learning more and more about the continuum of gender identity as I get to know people,” said Keith, who served as a judge advocate in the U.S. Navy and lives in Palm Beach Gardens. “The answer is always the same – accept people for who they are. They are going through their own journey and how ever they figure themselves out and all we have to do is love them through it.”
