The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida made settlement this week with the city of Miami Beach and two officers “accused of retaliating against a gay man for calling in an excessive use of force report,” as reported in the Daily Business Review.
The settlement calls for Miami Beach to pay Strickland $75,000 and police must adopt new policies regarding police misconduct. They must also train new police officers addressing harassment of gay men.
"For years, the ACLU has received reports about two systemic problems with the Miami Beach police: the harassment of gay men in and around Flamingo Park and the retaliation against persons reporting police misconduct," said ACLU staff attorney Shelbi Day. "We are hopeful that this settlement marks a turning point for the city of Miami Beach in seriously addressing these chronic problems."
