The cities of Wilton Manors, Oakland Park and Fort Lauderdale are partnering with Feeding South Florida to host a drive-thru food distribution event Friday at Mills Pond Park, 2201 NW 9th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.
“Wilton Manors has been working closely with Fort Lauderdale and Oakland Park in response to the coronavirus,” said Wilton Manors Commissioner Gary Resnick. “We understand that our community needs assistance now so we partnered with our neighbors and Feeding South Florida to organize a food drive.”
According to a spokesperson for Feeding South Florida they’ve seen a 600% increase in demand since the coronavirus pandemic began. In the last three weeks the organization has distributed over 9 million pounds of food to more than 160,000 households throughout South Florida. Since the crisis began they’ve added 130 food distributions on top of what they normally distribute each week.
“Feeding South Florida has been holding these in many areas,” Resnick said. “We hope that this provides some much needed help during these challenging times.”
A spokesperson for Wilton Manors said recipients need to wear facial coverings and to remain in their car and open their trunk when it is their turn in line. Volunteers will distribute food to each vehicle to make sure social distancing requirements are followed.
