Florida’s LGBTQ Democratic Caucus brings its summer conference to Fort Lauderdale next week to rally the base for the rapidly approaching midterm elections.

Themed “Without You We Lose,” the conference takes place at the Westin in northern Fort Lauderdale off Cypress Creek Road, July 22-24.

In a press release, Caucus President Stephen Gaskill said his organization is “ready to fight.” After the Supreme Court’s recent overturning of Roe v. Wade, coupled with the Florida legislature’s constant attacks on vulnerable communities, Gaskill said the conference is just what the doctor ordered.

“We all need to be inspired, uplifted and motivated to vote for change,” Gaskill said.

Numerous elected officials and candidates are scheduled to attend, speak and participate in panel discussions at the conference. Florida Representative Michele Rayner will receive the Legislative Leadership Award. Rayner recently withdrew from her Saint Petersburg area congressional campaign to seek re-election in state House District 62.

Interviewed prior to her withdrawal from the federal race, Rayner sounded the alarm against Republican tactics.

“When people are focused on destroying our democracy that means you can no longer have safe and affordable and attainable housing,” Rayner told SFGN in a Zoom interview in late April. “That means your child’s education is in peril, that means your healthcare is in peril … if we have no functioning working government, the things we expect from our country, the things we believe in, the American dream we all believe in is no longer available.”

Rayner is slated to join a panel on “Building the Blue Bench” with Representative Marie Woodson, Hallandale Beach Commissioner Sabrina Javellana and Congressional District 10 candidate Maxwell Frost.
