Equality Florida announced Thursday they were cancelling all three of their upcoming fundraisers in South Florida including the Equality Florida Palm Beach Brunch (March 22); the Equality Florida Miami Celebration (March 28); and the Equality Florida Key West Celebration (April 4).
“During this time of uncertainty surrounding the Coronavirus, Equality Florida’s number one priority is the health and safety of our community,” said Executive Director Nadine Smith in a prepared statement. “For that reason, we have cancelled or postponed all of our public events between now and mid-April, including our upcoming large-scale fundraisers.”In addition their staff and volunteers would not be attending many other upcoming events (some of which were already cancelled).
“We have a huge election on the horizon, and the impact of the coronavirus is putting enormous pressure on the team as we remain focused on advancing the rights of LGBTQ Floridians,” Smith said. “Out of consideration for the well-being of all on our team, Equality Florida has committed to providing paid sick leave to those impacted, continued access to mental health resources, ample time to prepare for potential quarantine, and is providing for staff to work remotely.”This announcement follows many other LGBT events being cancelled including the first ever Pride of the Americas, Miami Beach Pride, and Palm Beach Pride and Florida AIDS Walk.
