Best HIV Related Non-Profit
AIDS Healthcare Foundation

This is the first time The AIDS Healthcare Foundation has won Best HIV-AIDS Non-Profit with our readers.

“The Los Angeles-based AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is a global nonprofit organization providing cutting-edge medicine and advocacy to over 1,000,000 people in 41 countries. We are currently the largest provider of HIV/AIDS medical care in the U.S.,” states their website.

A sponsor of The Pride Center, and the recent Hialeah Pride festival this past October, AHF’s presence in South Florida is always where it needs to be.

You can visit their Wellness Centers to get tested for STDs for free, get your prescription filled at the AHF pharmacy, or even go shopping at their “Out-of-The-Closet” thrift stores, where customers can also be tested for HIV.

Wellness centers can be found in Broward, Wilton Manors, and Oakland Park.

AHF's motto is “Cutting Edge Medicine and Advocacy Regardless Of Ability To Pay,” and to many in the local community, it continues to be a valuable resource in the fight against HIV-AIDS.

Best Spiritual Center

1480 SW 9th Ave.

Fort Lauderdale

Welcoming is the overwhelming vibe one gets at the Sunshine Cathedral. Located at 1480 SW 9th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale, Sunshine Cathedral is known for spreading love, acceptance, peace, and joy.

Affiliated with Metropolitan Community Churches, Sunshine Cathedral is known for embracing diversity. Its primary constituency consists of same-gender loving and gender non-conforming people and their allies.

“I am humbled and grateful that SFGN readers have named Sunshine Cathedral as Best Spiritual Center,” says Rev. Dr. Durrell Watkins, Senior Minister, Sunshine Cathedral. Some may be responding to our arts programming, some to our indefatigable support of the LGBTQI+ children of God, others to our Brown Bag lunch program, others to our collaborations with other great agencies and spiritual communities, or still others to our progressive message and joyful worship experience. I am thankful that the community finds itself blessed by our ministries regardless of which ministries they appreciate most. Sunshine Cathedral is very happy to be a part of this dynamic community.”

Best Sports League
South Florida Amateur Athletic Association

For the fourth year in a row, the South Florida Amateur Athletic Association has received the most votes for “Best Sports League” with our readers.

Founded in 1994, SFAAA is a softball league that offers LGBT people and their allies a friendly place to meet, play and get fresh air away from the nightclub scene. Today, the league features more than 25 teams and nearly 400 members.

After their 2017 win with us, Tim Martin, SFAAA Chairman said, “I am so proud of our league and this honor.”

Games are played at Mills Pond Park, 2201 N.W. 9th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. The league is open to all regardless of skill level. A draft and tryout clinic is held prior to the start of each season to rate competitive levels for team selecting.

There are two seasons. One starts in late February and another begins in early September.

Whether you’re curious about ways to get more active, or want to become more involved with your local community, good ole’ softball may be just what you need in your life.

Best Sports Team
Wolfpack (Softball)

A Wolfpack has taken the town.

Clad in white with a fearsome wolf emblazoning, this is the first time the Wolfpack team has received the most votes for Best Sports Team.

It hasn’t always been easy for Team Wolfpack.

“I was one of a few people who started this team after having several forfeits and a collapsed season,” Coach John Bailey said. “We have consistently been in a rebuilding period, in part due to our members being re-rated during and in-between seasons.”

Manager Rocky Bowell added, “The Wolfpack has been around 6 seasons and was molded as a family first and a team second. The last 3 seasons I have been with them have been amazing, including creating great bonds with the guys on and off the field.”

It’s been a good year for the Pack.

“We have won 2 regular season titles, 2 Hurricane Showdown titles, 1 Orlando Meltdown title and our 1st Bid to the Gay Softball World Series this year,” Bowell said.

Bailey said, “We appreciate those who voted!” while Bowell added, “super excited to see what the future holds.”
