The Florida AIDS Walk 2011 is a 10 kilometer walk that will take place on Sunday, March 20th, beginning and ending at Huizenga Plaza in Fort Lauderdale.
Last year's event raised $460,000 with the participation of 3,000 walkers, 400 volunteers and 143 teams. SFGN will be joining in as a sponsor, and its staff will participate with teams in the March. In 2010, the GLCC/ Pride Center team raised nearly $25,000. Local bars, including Team Sidelines, the Alibi, and Scandals, also made measurable contributions in the thousands.
Funds raised by Florida AIDS Walk will enable the expansion of free HIV testing and prevention education in Florida’s Broward and Miami Dade counties, and provide healthcare and support for HIV-positive individuals throughout the state.
With the community's support, AHF Pharmacy, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Out of the Closet, and each of our 2011 Florida AIDS Walk Beneficiaries – SunServe, Broward House, Women In Network, and The Pride Center at Equality Park – will be empowered to carry out this mission.
AHF’s Out of the Closet Thrift Stores offers free HIV testing and treatment referral through an AHF Pharmacy built adjacent to the store. AHF’s nonprofit pharmacies employ only HIV specialists; all profits received are reinvested in AHF’s local and global programs.
For 2011, the Florida AIDS Walk family is dedicated not only to raising awareness of the fact that more than 167,000 Floridians are living with HIV/AIDS, but also to generating as much financial support as possible to provide the care and services that is needed for those living with AIDS.
You can participate by registering as a Team Captain or Individual Walker, volunteering on the day of the AIDS Walk, or donating to sponsor an individual walker or a team, or give directly to Florida AIDS Walk. Some major sponsors already enrolled for 2011 include AT & T and the Wells Fargo Banks.
