Kendrell Lavar Lyles, a 32-year-old Texas man, was charged with the murder of Muhlaysia Booker, a transgender woman.
Lyles was arrested by Dallas police on June 5 in connection to a murder of an unnamed female victim, and was later tied to two other murders, including Booker’s, according to the New York Times. LGBT rights activists applauded police for taking the murder investigation seriously.
“They’re taking seriously getting this conceivable serial killer off the road to make the trans community safer,” Lou Weaver, transgender programs community coordinator for Equality Texas, said, according to the Times. “They can start the healing process after the grieving process.”
Lyles has been charged with three counts of murder and is being held in jail without bail.
