Gay-owned businesses ready for shopping season.

If you are looking to keep your dollars gay this holiday season, the South Florida Gay News has a few recommendations.

For starters, Pride Factory is your one stop shop for everything from designer clothing to adult films. Located at 850 NE 13th Street in Fort Lauderdale, Pride Factory carries stylish shoes, clothing and bags from British label Gola. The store, in operation for 17 years, also carries several other labels that appeal to the cool kids and those who like to wear tight clothing. Other items of interest include a vast selection of jock straps, swimsuits and adult toys. You’ll also be hard pressed to find a larger or more diverse selection of gay films in what is considered a gay landmark business.

Pride Factory general manager Rocky Bowell said the store recently received a new line of high quality T-shirts from Brown Dog Fashion, which advertise local hotspots such as Haulover Beach and Wilton Manors. Bowell, GM at Pride Factory for 14 years, said the store, with its 8,300-square feet of showroom is a shopper’s delight.

“This is where we want the LGBT community to come and do their shopping,” Bowell said. “Support your local retailer, not Amazon or some other online firm.”

Moving over to the heart of the gayborhood and we arrive at To The Moon Marketplace, a fun little shop loaded with sweet stuff. To The Moon’s inventory of candy and chocolates can’t be beat. This writer was surprised to find Turkish Taffy, king size Sugar Daddy bars and a whole host of chocolate covered balls. The store also has a mighty selection of superhero memorabilia for Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman collectors and is proud to carry authentic American made Kit Cat clocks.

Store owner Antonio Dumas said he is expecting a delivery of handmade candy canes and “old world” Christmas cakes just in time for the holidays.

Located at 2205 Wilton Drive (next to Bill’s Filling Station) To The Moon is also a great place to pick up that special ornament for your Christmas tree. Mermaids and Mermen are literally hanging from the ceiling. To find your special gift, call Antonio at 954-564-2987.

Just down the drive is The Outlet, a clothing store geared for the guy going out for a night on the town. Fashionable dress shirts, jeans and pants – all new -- are on sale and The Outlet also carries men’s necklaces, hats, wristbands, cologne and rings.

“We are modeled for the shopper who wants value,” said store owner Jon Anthony, who has been in business 18 years in Wilton Manors. Anthony notes his prices for shirts begin at $4.99 and max out at $45. For jeans, prices top out at $24 and accessories begin at $2.

“We want people to enjoy the shopping experience and still be able to buy something that may brighten their day,” Anthony said. Sandwiched between an ice cream shop and a sports bar, The Outlet (2031-B, Wilton Drive), Anthony said, receives 40 to 50 percent of its business from straight customers.

For those shopping in Miami Beach, Perfect Gifts SoBe is the place to get your gay on. The store at 1516 Washington Avenue is known for its greeting cards, novelties and pet accessories, but also has a concept says owner Perry Martino.

“Get a gift, get it wrapped and go on to your party,” Martino explained.

Perfect Gifts SoBe has a beautiful selection of candles and fragrances and their greeting cards, Martino notes, range from naughty to nice. Formerly the Pink Palm on Lincoln Road, Perfect Gifts has been at its Washington Avenue address since early June. The store is open daily from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Traveling further up north there’s Studio 205, which bills itself as the ‘Fun Store’ and takes the distinction of being the only Pride store in the county. It’s conveniently located in the heart of Downtown Lake Worth. The store carries a collection of unique gifts, vintage items, and adult humor. The store opened strictly as a gay and lesbian pride store 20 years ago.

“I’ve evolved over the 20 years,” said Andy Amoroso, the store’s owner. “We still carry the gay and lesbian stuff, but we also have touristy items, and an organic juice bar. I try to carry things you don’t see everywhere else so it makes it unique to shop here. We encourage people to shop local, and shop in their own backyard.”

They’re open every day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Call 561-533-5272 for more info.
