California Rejects intersex Surgery Ban

California lawmakers rejected a bill that would have banned medically unnecessary genital surgeries on intersex children, according to ABC News.

The bill would have banned surgery on children under age six, but some lawmakers said that age was too young, and the term “intersex” is too broad. State Sen. Scott Wiener, a Democrat from San Francisco wrote the bill, and said that while parents had the final say on whether their child undergoes surgery, waiting until the child can speak will help them make it.

“These are kids who are told from a young age that there is something wrong with them," Wiener said. “There is nothing wrong with them, there is nothing to be fixed about them, and they deserve the basic human dignity of being able to make decisions about their own bodies.”

The measure would have been the first of its kind.
