April 23, 1984 — Gay-Related Immune Deficiency Announced

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary holds a press conference announcing that the cause of AIDS has been discovered. Known today as HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), the virus is first named GRID (gay-related immune deficiency).

April 24, 1993 — First Dyke March

Planned by the Lesbian Avengers, the march takes places in Washington, D.C., with over 20,000 women marching.

April 25, 1987 — First Openly Gay Person Elected to Public Office in Ireland

David Norris is elected to the Senate. He worked for years to decriminalize homosexual acts in Ireland, which was achieved in 1993.

April 26, 1944 — Violette Morris Killed

Morris had been banned from the 1928 Olympics for her lesbianism, but she was killed for an unrelated reason. She had been recruited by the Nazi SS and had given the Germans critical information for their 1940 invasion of Paris. She was shot as a traitor by the French Resistance.

April 27, 2009 — Marriage Equality Goes Into Effect in Iowa

It is the third U.S. state to allow same-sex couples to marry.

April 28, 1870 — Boulton and Park Arrested

Ernest Boulton and Frederick William Park could be described as Victorian-age drag queens. On this day, the pair and another man, Hugh Alexander Mundell, are arrested leaving one of their performances. They are subjected to an "intimate examination by a U.K. police doctor in order to establish whether they had had anal sex."

April 29, 2013 — First Male Current Pro Athlete Comes Out

NBA player Jason Collins writes an article for Sports Illustrated, in which he comes out as gay. He receives high praise from fellow NBA players, President Obama, and First Lady Michelle Obama, and many others.

April 30, 1997 —The Ellen Show Coming Out Episode

“The Ellen Show” coming out episode airs. Character Ellen Morgan comes out in "The Puppy Episode."
