Column: Log Cabin Republicans Making Strides Within the GOP

Earlier this month the Log Cabin Republicans hosted their Annual Spirit of Lincoln Dinner in Washington, DC for Chapter leaders and members.

The Log Cabin Republicans of Miami, the nation’s premier media-oriented Gay and Lesbian conservative group, sent Board member Luis M Caballero as its representative.

Former Ambassador Paul Wolfowitz, a prominent Nuclear Arms Reduction negotiator during the Reagan and George H. W. Bush Administrations, was the Keynote Speaker.

GOP Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker sent a warm congratulatory video commending Log Cabin Republicans for their successful efforts to capture a GOP Majority Senate, grow the number of GOP U.S. House seats; in addition to winning 31 Governorships and 75 percent of the State Legislatures.

The Log Cabin ballroom toasted Ambassador Wolfowitz and Governor Charlie Baker, who were among over 300 U.S. Senators, Congressmen and women, prominent conservative activists, and senior staff members from Capitol Hill and State Capitols, that signed an amicus brief supporting Gay marriage to the Supreme Court prior to its historic decision making same-sex marriage bans unconstitutional.

Members of the Log Cabin Republicans of Miami, led by Board member, Shane Pagano, and Chapter President, Mimi Planas, were instrumental in getting 23 GOP Florida office-holders to sign the brief.

Also, among the signers were the Koch Brothers, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and four GOP Senators: Rob Portman (R-OH), Susan Collins (R-ME), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Mark Kirk (R-IL), and former Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown. Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform and leader of the "No New Taxes Pledge" routinely signed by GOP members of Congress also added his name to the brief and attended the dinner.

Ambassador Wolfowitz told his conservative Gay audience that Republicans recognize and welcome the invaluable contributions of the triumphant Log Cabin Republicans both in campaigns and in public policy.

Mr. Wolfowitz also commended Log Cabin as the only Gay civil rights organization to oppose the Nuclear Arms Treaty with the oppressive homophobic nation of Iran.

Luis M. Caballero, a Hispanic Gay conservative, said he was profoundly impressed by the large number of new chapter leaders, and the obvious growing numbers of lesbian leaders, as well as Hispanics and Blacks while they celebrated in the nation’s Capitol.

Mr. Caballero has appeared on the Spanish-speaking Mira TV as a Log Cabin Republican.
