Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (Be Extra Careful About Marriage) released on Friday, Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, as India’s first major gay romantic comedy, according to Agence France-Presse.

India’s Supreme Court overturned colonial era rules criminalizing gay sex in 2018, but LGBT people still face stigma and discrimination. The film’s writer and director, Hitesh Kewalya, said he thought the best way to show that gay couples should be accepted is through comedy, AFP reported. Bhushan Kumar, chairman and managing director of co-producer T-Series told AFP they were on board the moment they heard the story.

"When we heard the story, our first reaction was that it's a perfect family entertainer that subtly speaks about the fact [that] love has no boundaries, no gender," Kumar told AFP. "We have an interesting message — of societal acceptance — albeit [presented] in a much more fun manner so that it reaches more people and helps them re-evaluate their pre-conditioned thoughts."
