Tuesday, Dec. 1 is World AIDS Day. It is an opportunity to for people worldwide, including those in South Florida, to unite in the fight against HIV. It is also a day to commemorate those who have died.

This year’s theme is “The Time to Act is Now.” The goal is to raise awareness of the impact of HIV/AIDS and discuss strategies on how to achieve an AIDS-free generation. Despite the tremendous progress made in understanding and responding to the epidemic over the past three decades, HIV and AIDS remain important health challenges in Florida.

Florida still ranks first nationally in the number of new HIV infection cases. “In 2014, 5,897 newly diagnosed people living with HIV were identified in the state of Florida,” Lorenzo Lowe, Compass’ HIV Prevention Coordinator explains, “We must continue to find innovative ways to educate and empower people to stop the spread and bring forth the end of AIDS in our lifetime.”

World AIDS Day is an important reminder to the public and government that HIV has not gone away. There is still a crucial need to get tested, raise money, fight prejudice and improve education. WAD was the first ever global health day and the first one was held in 1988. There are many events commemorating WAD across South Florida. Some of them are highlighted below:
