In the wake of this weekend’s mass shooting in Orlando that took the lives of 49 people and injured at least 53 others, there is an urgent need for blood donors to volunteer.

Unfortunately, not all donors are welcome. Due to an updated Food and Drug Administration policy, a man who has had sex with another man in the last year cannot legally give blood in Orlando.

Rumors that this ban was lifted appear false, according to OneBlood.

“All FDA guidelines remain in effect for blood donation,” the not-for-profit community asset said on Twitter. “There are false reports circulating that FDA rules were being lifted. Not true.”

In addition, there are other rules for blood donation – if you are pregnant, on certain types of medication, or suffer from high blood pressure you may not be able to donate blood. To find out if you are eligible, visit
