Enbar Cohen was born in Israel, but was raised in South Florida since she was one year old.
Cohen was elected as an Aventura city commissioner in 2012. Prior to serving the city, she served her community in other ways, as Assistant Director of Safe Schools South Florida.
While at Safe Schools, Cohen helped organize an annual Diversity Day, where more than 400 LGBTQ youth throughout Miami-Dade County public schools came together for a one-day conference.
Currently, Cohen is the chair of the LGBT Caucus for the Young Elected Officials Network, where she helps young people and state officials progress legislation for the LGBT community.
Cohen sees the growth of the LGBT community locally, starting with other organizations and businesses.
“I believe that many organizations and companies are coming forward and standing up for LGBT equality because it is the right thing to do, and they are doing so financially,” she said. “It is important for us to reach into our own pockets, and support the work that is helping push our community forward.”
In the future, Cohen plans to graduate law school while continuing to serve in the community, elected or otherwise.
