Chamber Chat: GLBX: You are Welcome Here

Do you remember that moment in President Obama’s State of the Union address on January 20th, 2015 when he said, “...That’s why we defend free speech and advocate for political prisoners, and condemn the persecution of women, or religious minorities, or people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. We do these things not only because they're right, but because they make us safer."?

History was made that day and many of us got to experience that feeling. A pretty amazing feeling to be more accurate. It was the first time that a sitting POTUS mentioned, scratch that, included LGBT community in a State Of The Union address. Six months later, the Supreme Court ended the debate on marriage equality. Once again LGBT community were included.

Although there are still some people that are fighting desperately to see the opposite happen, inclusiveness is clearly the way to go. This is precisely why the theme was chosen as a big part of the reinvention of the GLBX Council of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, in early 2016 a new, refreshed logo was unveiled with the tagline, “The All Inclusive Council”.

In the spirit of sharing our excitement for where the GLBX is headed as the all-inclusive council, we thought this would be a good time to answer some questions that we get on a regular basis.

Isn’t GLBX just a leads group?

Although the GLBX started out as a leads group several years ago, it is much more than that now. The leads group is still a valuable component of the council but there are other benefits from membership. In addition to monthly after-hours mixers - a great way to network, there are regular luncheons, joint events with other councils, volunteer opportunities with other organizations impacting the community, and being a GLBX Council member gives members access to over 1,300 Fort Lauderdale companies.

Do I have to be an LGBT business to be a member?

No. The “X” in GLBX can mean whatever you identify as. The only requirement that must be met is that you have to be a member of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce to become a GLBX Council member. Come to a GLBX event to experience just how welcoming the environment is to everyone.

Visit www.FTLchamber.com to find our events online and to register.

Is this the gay chamber?

No. The GLBX is a council of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce. A council is a subset group within the main chamber that has reached a high number of members, strong participation and is influential in the community.

How can I get more involved in GLBX?

Start by attending an event like one of the after-hours or a luncheon. If your industry is not already represented, you can become an active member of the leads group. Beyond that members have the opportunity to join GLBX committees which include:

  • Community Outreach
  • Events
  • Communication/PR
  • Equality Taskforce
  • Artopia
