Roseanne star Sara Gilbert came out to the press and public, quietly during a Wednesday press conference at the Television Critics Association in L.A. Her sexuality has long been one of the “open secrets” of Hollywood. She has two children with life partner, producer Allison Adler, whom she has been with since 2002. Adler gave birth to their 5-year-old son Levi, while Gilbert gave birth to 3-year-old daughter Sawyer in 2007.
Gilbert has been active since the end of Roseanne. She even appeared as a co-star on The Big Bang Theory, alongside Roseanne veteran Johnny Galecki. While Gilbert has come out publicly, Galecki was recently on The View denying gay rumors. However, that’s another story!
The reason she was at the press conference was to discuss her upcoming new show, The Talk. The program is a talk show, with six women on the panel. If you think that sounds like The View, you are right. However, the Gilbert vehicle is from a mother’s point of view. Parenting is the foundation of the show.
Gilbert was asked how comfortable she feels being publicly out, as Hollywood insiders knew of her relationship. Publicists previously asked reporters to not mention anything about her relationship with Allison Adler.
“This is a whole new world for me. I’m not an expert on this, or I don’t analyze these things,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I’m just sort of living my life.”
She says she will talk about her experiences as a lesbian when they arise.
“I’ve been acting my whole life,” says Gilbert. “And I’ve never really discussed my personal life. This is a talk show…so obviously I’m going to be discussing my life more.”
The Talk will air on CBS. In addition to Gilbert, Julie Chen, Leah Remini, Holly Robinson Peete, Sharon Osbourne and Marissa Jaret Winokour will be on the panel.
“We’re six different women, six totally [different] views on life, all mothers, all in relationships and there you have it,” Sharon Osbourne stated. She also said she wants to do the show because she loves Sara. “I admire her very much and she’s a great woman!”
