A former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant came out on Trans Day of Visibility last Friday.

“I thought I would dedicate today in the spirit of being visible to share my transition with all of you,” Gia Gunn said in an Instagram video. “I have been on hormone replacement therapy now for almost about a year, and I identify as female, and I indeed am transgender.”

The video has over 90,000 views. There are over 1,500 comments encouraging Gunn and wishing her luck on her transition.

“Thank you all so much to each and every single one of you who have continuously supported me on my journey,” she added. “I can only hope the best for each and every single one of my trans brothers and sisters.”

As a message to anyone struggling with their gender identity, Gunn gave one piece of advice: “Lets be visible.”

Gia Gunn was on season six of RuPaul’s Drag Race. She is not the first contestant to come out — Sonique from season two, Carmen Carrera from season three, Kenya Michaels and Jiggly Caliente from season four have all come out as transgender. On Monica Beverly Hillz’s appearance in season five, she came out as trans.

Peppermint from season nine became the show’s first contestant to openly identify as transgender before the show began.
