Summer Shorts & Dirty Little Secrets brings the performer to South Florida.
There is a lot more to Jai Rodriguez than his time as the “Culture Guy” on Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. He has since released singles on iTunes, appeared in movies, and made television appearances. Rodriguez has also taken to producing shows – something he feels he owes to his time on Bravo with the “Fab Five” as they were responsible for producing their own segments.
“This year I just came off of three network shows,” said the friendly and charming Rodriguez of his television roles. “I had the opportunity to be executive producer on show about sex therapy, called Sex Rx. My ex is a therapist whose focus is love, relationships and sex. He’s in a very niche position, as it’s usually cougars, women in their 40s through 60s, in the field.”
The show, which will air on Logo, follows couples and individuals over the course of 10 weeks, with group therapy sessions highlighting couple or individuals in each episode. While he loves producing Rodriguez still wishes to do more acting and touring. He has been in South Florida since May 18 and will be here until the beginning of July.
“As a performer you just go where the work takes you,” he said with an energetic glow. “Summer Shorts wanted a headliner and they’ve never done that before. I think any performer should jump at the chance to play five characters in one night. Dirty Little Secrets is something I’ve been doing for a few years now, and reworking it as my life changes. It just opened to rave reviews in Miami – people aren’t used to seeing a hybrid of a concert meets theatrical experience.”
He will take Summer Shorts and Dirty Little Secrets to Broward County as well, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. To promote the show he will appear at The Manor to sing a few songs with other cabaret performers.
Rodriquez was very fun to speak with, which is reassuring as many celebrities have a stage persona which is a complete 180 from their interview style.
“Two of the songs in Dirty Little Secrets are on the radio right now. I’ll just tell you both of the songs have the word f*%k in them,” he said laughingly. “Let’s see if your readers can guess which songs they are.”
He has lived in Miami before, briefly, for some of his television appearances. He loves it here, and does not seem to mind the humidity. However, even though he loves his work, one thing he is excited about is a day off.
“People keep giving me all these great recommendations – where to go, what to do, where to eat. We’re working everyday,” he said of he and his team. “There is a press event or a party so I just haven’t had time. We don’t have good Cuban food in Los Angeles so I look forward to that.”
He has not gotten any time to hit the beach, something many South Florida locals also lament. When asked about his friendship with former cast mates from Queer Eye he praises their time together but seldom gets to see them.
“We were spending 16 hours a day together. We weren’t best-friends,” Rodriguez said honestly. “But we really came to be like family, like brothers. We all lived in New York but never met before the show began. It’s easier for them to get together because they’re all in New York. When we see each other though, it’s like times haven’t changed.”
