Justin Flippen was a beloved Wilton Manors mayor who touched the hearts of many, and so Brooke and Randy Bitton wanted to write a book on how Flippen influenced their lives.

What was your inspiration behind your most recent book?

The inspiration behind our novel, "GAYME’S OVER... JUST IN TIME FOR MURDER!" Was the impact and the friendship of The People’s Mayor, Justin Flippen. To us, he provided a message of hope, love, and compassion for the City of Wilton Manors. He left a legacy of pride, love, and compassion for all citizens.

What does "Reading with Pride" mean to you?

To us, “Reading with Pride” means being proud of who you are, living your authentic life, listening to the opinions of others, and reading about other people’s experiences, which may differ from your own.

Why do you feel representation of a variety of people is so important when it comes to writing books? Why this book and this person?

We feel that it is important to represent a variety of people, when writing books, to not only show our unique traits, but also our commonalities. Representing all groups of people in writing imitates life. Each of us is unique in looks, ideas, and beliefs. The more we know about each other, the more we can look upon each other with the respect that they deserve.

Tell us a little more about the book and why you decided to write it.

The book is a sequel to our first novel, "DRAGGED INTO MURDER," which involves five gay men and their straight ally girlfriend who go undercover in drag to solve murders. This book ("GAYME’S OVER... JUST IN TIME FOR MURDER!") was important to us because we wanted to put into writing how Justin Flippen influenced our lives. We wanted to share his influence with our readers, and, also, we wanted to highlight the City of Wilton Manors, and the people we have met, who have been so accepting of us.

What can fans expect from your book?

Fans can expect not only a murder mystery, but the emotions we all feel. Also, readers who did not get the opportunity to meet Justin Flippen in person, will be able to see the character traits that, to us, made him so inspirational. As in our first book, we always include authentic voices. In this book, those voices took the form of letters to readers, showcasing obstacles that each of us may have in our lives, and ways to overcome them; also, people who were close to Justin wrote about memorable experiences they had with him, and were kind enough to share those with our readers; the final submissions are recipes that show love of family, friends, and community.

What's up next for you in the bookish world?

In our next book, we will be partnering with Dee Dee Van Carter, a superstar drag performer, to take readers on another journey with "The Dragged Into Murder Detective Society!"
