Independent businesses are the lifeblood of Main Street, USA.  Wilton Manors has a wealth of independently owned businesses, from small eateries to deluxe boutiques.  However, local resident Alan Fisher was often asked a question for which he had no response while working at Gay Mart.

"Shoppers frequently asked me, 'Where is the local bookstore?'  It was hard to tell them there was nothing local, and independently owned, where they could both learn information about the community and pick up a national best seller."

Fisher, after receiving more than 30 rejections from local school boards do to his seniority and salary requirements – after teaching for 12 years – took inspiration and advice from two Drive merchants.

"Antonio Dumas’ success with To the Moon was very inspiring.  Gay Mart’s Craig Attebury told me to go for my dreams, and make a major life change before I turn 40," said Fisher. "So I did!"

After 6 months of sleepless nights, The Book Nook will celebrate its grand opening on Friday, April 16, with a 7:00 pm reception at their 2207 Wilton Drive location.

Readers can select from both new and used books.  Customers can put in requests for titles not available, check out the latest best seller, or pick up a children’s book for that special niece or godson.  Therefore, it will not be a retailer of exclusively gay content.

"James Patterson is hot right now, for instance, so he’ll be our first featured writer," says Fisher who is currently reading Patterson’s "Worst Case".

National newspapers not readily available at your immediate disposal will also be available for lazy Sundays, as well as local community pages.  A café, so that readers can sip tea and coffee in the Florida room-styled reading area, is something Fisher would like to develop in the future.

Poetry readings and open mic nights will let our literary neighbors show off their craft.  Or – if you are not a reader – come in for game night or to play Wii or Xbox.

The store will also offer gift wrapping and shipping for customers.  "If you buy something at another store we will certainly wrap those purchases as well," says Fisher who feels such Main Street services of times past will only further the charm Wilton Manors offers residents and day trippers alike.

Certainly, those larger chains beginning with “B” have selections of interest to the local community.  However, Fisher envisions the Book Nook becoming something of an unofficial Wilton Drive community center.

In addition to having a community focus and presence the shop has a family supporting it.

"If it weren’t for my partner, Jim Forney, and my mother June, I would not have been able to do this without their support."

An added bonus, if you live in Wilton Manors or close-by, "You can walk here," said Fisher proudly.  "For people like my partner and myself it’s great to just have everything we want within walking distance."
