Who says classical music concerts have to be stuffy affairs? Local orchestras serve up scintillating programs and audiences pack the performing arts center for Gold Coast Jazz Society concerts and visiting artists.


South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble

Oct. 19, Broward Center

With the help of legendary drag performer Miss Coco Peru, the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewall Riots with two newly commissioned pieces will be performed alongside moving works that tell the story of the LGBTQ movement.


“Grand Season Opening: Themes and Variations”

Maestro Eduardo Marteret leads the orchestra’s 2019-20 “Grand Season Opening,” including Hindemith’s “Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes of Carl Maria von Weber,” Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 and a world premiere, “Contrapunto” by Martinez.



“In Concert Against Hate”

South Florida Symphony

Nov. 16 – 19, Temple Israel of Greater Miami

Join Maestra Sebrina Maria Alfonso and the musicians of the symphony for this special program of music to combat anti-Semitism and other forms of hate. The performance benefits the Anti-Defamation League.


Gold Coast Jazz Society

Nov. 9, Broward Center

Gold Coast Jazz Society opens its 2019-20 season with the Bobby Rodriguez Orchestra, a 19-piece big band formed in 1981 and specializing in swing and bebop from the ‘40s. Over the years, their repertoire has expanded to include a variety of crowd-pleasing jazz, pop and Latin charts.

Florida Grand Opera presents Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s masterwork, “Don Giovanni,” the story of the world’s greatest lover, a young, arrogant, and charismatic aristocrat, who will stop at nothing to fulfill his ravenous lust. When a midnight seduction ends in murder, Don Giovanni soon finds himself pursued by those he has wronged.

Violinist Lara St. John lends her unique interpretation of Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” in a contrast of sound and silence, movement and stillness. It is an immersion of oneself – engulfing, absorbing, tantalizing – as audience experience both the power of the music and the force of nature.


Gold Coast Jazz Society

The Emmet Cohen Trio is making waves in the New York City jazz scene and across the globe. The trio melds all styles of jazz with an emphasis on the Great American Songbook. Cohen is a rising star and the 2019 winner of the American Pianists Association Cole Porter Award.
