South Florida actor and cabaret artist Eytan Deray has added playwright to his resume.

Deray’s play, “Educating Asher,” will receive its world premiere July 29 – Aug. 14 at Empire Stage in Fort Lauderdale.

“I started writing ‘Educating Asher’ five years ago as personal therapy after finding out about a beloved teacher’s passing,” Deray explained. “Now it’s a fully realized portrait of grief, friendships between generational gaps, and the importance of teachers/mentors in our life. This play is for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, and my hope is that audiences will leave the theatre not just moved, but ready to start a much-needed conversation.”

Hiding in the kitchen at a reception following the funeral of his gay former middle school teacher, Asher is not quite sure how to process his grief. His boyfriend unsuccessfully encourages him to talk to the teacher’s widower. Soon enough, Asher is forced to confront his grief when the teacher’s ghost appears in the kitchen with him. Only then does Asher say everything he ever wanted to the teacher that changed his life.

The cast includes Murphy Hayes, Michael Harper and Noah Levine, with Deray playing Asher. Seth Trucks directs.

Eytan Deray’s “Educating Asher” will be performed Friday – Sunday, July 29 – Aug. 14 at Empire Stage, 1140 N. Flagler Dr. in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $25 at
