Local gay men’s choruses will sing in the season with festive programs of traditional holiday favorites and a few surprises, too.
Here are some highlights of the concerts ahead:
Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida
The Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida, under the direction of Harold Dioquino, celebrate their tenth anniversary with two holiday programs. They open the weekend on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Sunshine Cathedral, 1480 S.W. 9th Ave. in Fort Lauderdale. This concert will feature audience favorites from past holiday performances. Tickets start at $40 at GMCSF.
On Sunday, Dec. 15 at 7 p.m., the chorus returns to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood. Featuring “American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks and a live orchestra, the chorus will fill the brand new, $150-million, state-of-the-art Hard Rock Live concert venue with the sounds of the season.
Every year, the creative team develop a storyline for their holiday concerts. “Somewhere in my Memory” by Mark Hayes, a touching song about Alzheimer’s disease, inspired the 2019 program. It’s also a very personal cause for artistic director Harold Dioquino, whose father in the Philippines suffers from the disease, and the chorus is partnering with the Alzheimer’s Association to raise awareness. Tickets start at $40 at GMCSF.org.
Miami Gay Men’s Chorus
Artistic director Anthony Cabrera and the Miami Gay Men’s Chorus invited audiences “Home for the Holidays” on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 8 p.m. at Coral Gables Congregational Church, 3010 De Soto Blvd. in Coral Gables, and Sunday, Dec. 15 at 6 p.m. at All Souls Episcopal Church, 4025 Pine Tree Dr. in Miami Beach.
“Home for the Holidays,” a sentimental nod to the chorus’ return to Miami Beach, will wrap the season in the music—some traditional and familiar, some brutally honest—paying tribute to “perfectly imperfect” families. The centerpiece of the concert is “The Long Christmas Dinner,” a contemporary Baroque-style oratorio about an uncomfortable holiday homecoming for a gay son and his partner. The chorus will be joined at both performances by the South Florida Jewish Chorale, under the direction of Jami Lercher. Tickets are $25 at MGMChorus.org.
Voices of Pride
Voices of Pride, the Gay Men’s Chorus of the Palm Beaches, closes out the holiday season with “Voices of the Season” on Thursday, Dec. 19 and Friday, Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 100 N. Palmway in Lake Worth. Artistic director Tom Pilecki will lead a program of traditional holiday favorites. Tickets are $25 at VoicesOfPride.org.
