Winter Music Conference,Florida AIDSWalk Highlight a Busy Spring Week

Miami Beach will become the epicenter of the dance music world (as if it isn’t already) next week as thousands of industry execs, DJs and producers, and music lovers converge on Miami for the 25th annual Winter Music Conference.

The five-day event, which begins on Tuesday, March 23 at the Eden Roc resort on Collins Ave., will include a wide range of events, including exhibits, seminars and competitions for DJs and VJs. Throughout the conference, DJs will be spinning in the lobby of the hotel.

On Thursday, the International Dance Music Awards will be held at The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater featuring nearly a dozen performances by the biggest names in dance music. The conference concludes Friday and Saturday with the Ultra Music Festival, featuring nearly 50 top DJs performing on four stages.

Walking for a Cure

In Fort Lauderdale, the annual 10 kilometer AIDSWalk will be held on Sunday, March 28, featuring special guests Jeanne White-Ginder, mother of child AIDS victim Ryan White, author Eston Dunn and DJ Scott Mann.

Several local companies and bars are hosting events this week to benefit AIDSWalk:

Monday, March 22

On Monday, March 22, Georgie’s Alibi will host a fundraiser in the Manchester Room featuring Florida’s own Dame Edna and the delicious creations of the Alibi catering team. A $25 contribution gets you a tantalizing array of hors d’oeuvres, one cocktail and a raffle entry. Alibi will also host a pre-registration party on Friday, March 26 between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Alibi is located in The Shoppes of Wilton Manors, 2266 Wilton Dr.

Pull out your funkiest shoes for an AIDS­Walk kick-off party on Tuesday, March 23 at Allied Kitchen & Bath Design Center, 616 W. Oakland Park Blvd. in Ft. Lauderdale. A $20 suggested donation at the door gets you a beautiful selection of gourmet food and wine and supports the cause.

Several local bars and restaurants will also be hosting pre-registration parties this week, so it’s not too late to sign up. Sidelines Sports Bar, 2031 Wilton Dr., hosts its event on Wednesday, March 24 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Bill’s Filling Station, 2209 Wilton Dr., will hold a sign-up party on Friday, March 26 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. And, if you procrastinate, you can also pre-register at Rosie’s Bar and Grill, 2449 Wilton Dr., on Saturday, March 27 between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Just in time for the Winter Music Conference, Lincoln Road nightclub Score presents its weekly Planeta Macho, a Latin showcase with DJ George Ferrero with Pelu Rivero on the drums. Enjoy the special performance by actor/recording artist Fedro (“Vive el Sueno”), singing from his new CD.

Wednesday, March 24

The Alibi is hosting a birthday party tonight for Reba McIntyre, Liza Minnelli and Lady Gaga and they will be there….well, sort of. Nicolette appears at 9 p.m. as Reba, Jimmy does Liza as only he can at 10 p.m. and TP Lords channels Gaga at 11 p.m. There will be birthday cupcakes and more to celebrate our favorite divas’ b’days.

Thursday, March 25

On Thursdays, Ladies rule at MOVA, 1625 Michigan Ave. in Miami Beach. The popular weekly party, presented by Pandora Events, features DJ Zehno and half priced drinks from 11 p.m. to midnight. No cover.

Friday, March 26

Looking to get into the groove? South Beach promoter Edison Farrow’s newest party, Hype Fridays, is the perfect way to ease into your weekend. With DJ Smeejay in the booth and free Finlandia vodka between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. how can you go wrong. The party is at Bar 721, 721 Lincoln Lane.
