For the third year in a row the Aqua Foundation for Women is celebrating LGBT families with its Family BBQ.

This year’s even takes place from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24.

In previous years, the event took place at Oleta River State Park in North Miami.  It has now moved to Greynolds Park in North Miami Beach.  And it’s free. That’s right – no charge. However, there is a parking charge of $6 for cars and SUVs, and fifteen dollars for buses, trucks or RVs.

Executive Director of AFW, Robin Schwartz, discussed how the Family BBQ got started:  “When I first became Executive Director, I had the opportunity to speak with many women, some who were already parents and some who were considering becoming parents. Several expressed to me the need to meet other women with children. With this in mind, Aqua created the Family BBQ.”

The event is open to all LGBT families as well as families headed by LGBT allies.

Schwartz commented on why it is important to offer the Family BBQ.  “…it is important to have opportunities to socialize with each other. Since there are fewer opportunities for LGBT families, it is important we create them.”

She also added that “the Aqua Family BBQ is a perfect place for LGBT parents to make new friends, share ideas on raising their children, get referrals from each other and simply have a blast”

The number of attendees has steadily increased over the past few years. “The first year, we had about fifty,” Schwartz said.  “Last year, we had about one hundred.”

There will also be more activities for children, including a bounce house, face painter, games and a playground.  For older children, there will be football, soccer and other games.

As far as food, the event will offer vegetarian options such as veggie burgers as well as the standard BBQ fare.

Schwartz noted the feedback from past attendees.

“Many have shared that they were extremely happy to meet other LGBT families. They are pleased their children can spend time with other families that have two moms or two dads.”
