The students looked at more than 150,000 geocoded tweets (tweets that say where the user is located) over a one-year period to come up with the map. All tweets used in the study are from June 2012 to April 2013.
The map can be zoomed out to show bigger patterns, or zoomed in to display where each county falls in the homophobic scale. The tweets can also be sorted out to show results for keywords like “fag,” “dyke,” “homo” and “queer.” According to the map, the most hateful tweets (and users) come from the eastern half of the country, specifically places like Oklahoma and Texas.
In South Florida, the more homophobic places in seem to be the City of Davie and Homestead in the southern end of Miami-Dade County. As for Florida, most homophobic tweets come from the Gulf coast area.
