Gainesville Mayor Craig Lowe isn’t getting exactly the type of publicity he would like going into his run-off election in April.
The openly gay mayor, who’s nearing the end of his two-year term, was charged with driving under the influence, property damage and careless driving, after he was arrested on March 21.
According to The Gainesville Sun, police found Lowe asleep at the wheel of his 2005 Honda Civic intersection of Northeast 21st St. and 156th Ave. in north of Gainesville. The car suffered major front-end damage and had four flat tires.
“I apologize for the harm that this situation has caused to my friends, supporters, and the citizens of Gainesville,” Lowe said in a statement after his release. “Moving forward, I will work hard to regain your confidence and trust.”
The 55-year-old gay mayor said he had had three beers at the time of the arrest.
Lowe faces former city councilmember, Ed Braddy, who was himself arrested for a DUI in 2006 in the run-off election.
